When did Jesus ascend to heaven?
This article explores the apparent contradiction between Luke 23.43 and John 20.17 concerning Jesus' ascension. It proposes that the term "today" indicates the certainty of the divine promise rather than an immediate action, highlighting the harmony of the Gospels when examined in their eschatological context.
Hebrews 3.7-15 (King James Version) :Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org

Luke's introduction
First commentary in the series on the Acts of the Apostles, this article analyzes Luke's introduction (Acts 1.1-3). It presents Luke as the author of the two works addressed to Theophilus, raises the hypothesis that Theophilus was the one who commissioned them, and stresses the forty days of post-resurrection teaching on the Kingdom of God. These verses provide the transition between the Gospel and the history of the nascent Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Luke 24.50-53 (King James Version) :And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org -

The apostles' conversation with Jesus
Luke reports Jesus' last conversation with his eleven apostles before the Ascension (Acts 1.4-8). Jesus commands them to wait in Jerusalem for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, refuses to reveal the eschatological times reserved to the Father, and entrusts them with a universal mission: to be his witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. This passage forms the structural outline of the book of Acts.
Colossians 1.5-6 (King James Version) :For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org -

The disciples' return and wait
After the ascension of Jesus (May 12, 33), the disciples return to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a "Sabbath day's journey" away. They gather in an upper room, probably the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, and devote themselves unanimously to prayer, together with the women and the family of Jesus. This period of waiting foreshadows the characteristics of the nascent Church.
Acts 2.42-47 (King James Version) :And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org

Post-resurrection appearances
This article presents the ten appearances of Jesus after his resurrection, as recounted in the New Testament. From Mary Magdalene at the tomb to the apostles before the Ascension, including the disciples at Emmaus and more than five hundred brothers, these encounters attest to the reality of the resurrection and establish the foundation of Christian faith. The Gospel authors probably selected from among all these appearances.
Mark 16.9-11 (King James Version) :Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.King James Version (1769), domaine public — texte : eBible.org
