The resurrection and the various appearances

  • The Appearance of the Messiah Jesus to Peter

The appearance of the risen Jesus to Simon Peter is attested by Luke 24.34 and 1 Corinthians 15.3-5, but no evangelist describes its content. Set on Sunday, April 3, AD 33, after the appearances to the women and before that to the Emmaus disciples, this private encounter appears to be a personal reconciliation between Jesus and Peter after his denial. Peter would thus have been the first apostle to see the risen Lord.

John 20.14-18 (King James Version) :
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

  • Post-resurrection appearances

This article presents the ten appearances of Jesus after his resurrection, as recounted in the New Testament. From Mary Magdalene at the tomb to the apostles before the Ascension, including the disciples at Emmaus and more than five hundred brothers, these encounters attest to the reality of the resurrection and establish the foundation of Christian faith. The Gospel authors probably selected from among all these appearances.

    1 Corinthians 15.7 (King James Version) :
After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
