The parable of the hidden treasure

The parable of the hidden treasure (Mt 13,44), reported only by Matthew, teaches that the kingdom of heaven is of incomparable value. A man discovers a buried treasure, covers it up again, then sells everything to buy the field. This parable illustrates the joy and determination of the one who recognizes the supreme value of the Kingdom, ready to sacrifice everything to obtain it. It resonates especially with Matthew's own journey, for he himself had left everything to follow Jesus.

Comments

Matthew is the only one to report this about the kingdom of heaven. This episode seemed particularly significant to him, for he had given up his position, his possessions, as well as his family and friends to follow the Messiah Jesus. It is quite possible that his choice baffled many of his acquaintances, but he had discovered this precious jewel.

A man discovers a treasure hidden in a field. He is so happy about his discovery that he decides to hide the treasure again. Then he goes and sells everything he owns in order to buy that field and thus make sure that the treasure belongs to him.

Meaning

This teaches that the kingdom of heaven is of incomparable value, worthy of every sacrifice. The man's joy and determination show the importance of recognizing and seizing spiritual opportunities, being ready to give up everything else to obtain what is truly precious.

It is a beautiful illustration of the immense joy and the change of priorities that the discovery of the kingdom of God can bring into someone's life.

It is evident that the authors of the Gospels emphasized events that had deeply marked them. As they wrote, these memories projected clear images in their minds.
