Jesus' family

Jesus did not appear alone in history: he was born into a Jewish family rooted in traditions, a genealogy, and a specific context. Joseph and Mary, but also the relatives who gravitate around them — Elizabeth, Zechariah, John the Baptist — form the family and emotional circle in which the childhood and youth of Jesus take place.

This journey explores the accounts of the nativity, of childhood in Nazareth, of the presentation at the Temple, and of the return from Egypt, as reported by Matthew and Luke. It also deals with questions of genealogy, which link Jesus to the Davidic line and to the history of Israel.

Behind these accounts lie important theological stakes: the fulfillment of prophecies, the messianic identity of Jesus, and the way God enters human history through an ordinary family. The family of Jesus is thus the first ground where the encounter between the divine and the human takes place.
