From the third Passover to the beginning of the last week

  • The authorities are looking for the Messiah Jesus in order to arrest him

During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, the crowd wonders about the messianic identity of Jesus. Despite the confusion over his origins and the attempts of the religious authorities to arrest him, Jesus teaches publicly in the Temple, reaffirms his divinity and announces his coming departure. Since his hour has not yet come, the guards cannot seize him. This episode, unique to the Gospel of John (7.25-36), illustrates the growing opposition between Jesus and the religious authorities.

John 7.30 (King James Version) :
Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

The last week before the arrest

  • The questions of the foreigners to the Messiah Jesus

An episode unique to John (John 12.20-50), set on Holy Tuesday in the Court of the Gentiles. Some Greeks ask to see Jesus, which triggers the announcement of the hour of his glorification. Through the image of the grain of wheat, Jesus reveals that his death is the source of universal life. The cross is presented as a glorious lifting up that draws all people to him, opening salvation to all nations.

John 12.37-43 (King James Version) :
But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
