The Protestant Reformation
The Protestant Reformation, initiated by Martin Luther in 1517 with his 95 Theses at Wittenberg, profoundly transformed Western Christianity. Based on the principles of Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide and Sola Gratia, it led to the emergence of Protestantism in its many forms (Lutheranism, Calvinism and Anglicanism) and brought major religious, political and cultural upheavals to Europe, marking the beginning of the modern era.

Greeting cards
Greeting cards originated in England in 1843, when Sir Henry Cole created the first commercial Christmas card. Helped by improvements in printing and lower postal rates, they spread rapidly. In the twentieth century, companies such as Hallmark made them popular worldwide. Today, physical and electronic cards remain a favoured way of expressing affection and goodwill during the festive season.
