The progression of Daniel's great visions

One of the characteristics of the book of Daniel is the recurrence of themes already introduced.

A first vision presents a general architecture.

A later vision returns to certain elements, develops them or clarifies them.

This method appears particularly in the visions concerning the kingdoms.

It is therefore preferable to read the prophecies according to a principle of progression and deepening rather than as totally independent revelations.

This observation does not mean that all the visions describe exactly the same events.

Some have a broader scope; others focus attention on a particular period or question.

Daniel 2 provides the first great prophetic representation in the book.

Nebuchadnezzar sees a statue made of several materials:

• a head of gold;
• a chest and arms of silver;
• a belly and thighs of bronze;
• legs of iron;
• feet mixing iron and clay.

A stone cut out “without hands” then strikes the statue and becomes a great mountain filling the whole earth (Daniel 2.31-35).

Daniel explains that the different parts of the statue represent a succession of kingdoms (Daniel 2.36-43).

The vision thus establishes a first structure:

kingdom → kingdom → kingdom → kingdom → divine intervention → kingdom that will never be destroyed.

Daniel 2 provides the general framework from which several later visions can be compared.

Daniel 7 takes up the theme of the succession of kingdoms.

But the metals of the statue are replaced by four beasts rising out of the sea.

The interpretation states:

“These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth” (Daniel 7.17).

The general correspondence with Daniel 2 is therefore strong.

However, Daniel 7 brings several new elements:

• the kingdoms appear in animal form;
• the fourth beast receives particular attention;
• ten horns are mentioned;
• another little horn appears;
• this power persecutes the saints;
• a heavenly court sits in judgment;
• one like a son of man receives dominion;
• the saints finally receive the kingdom.

Daniel 7 therefore does not simply repeat Daniel 2.

It deepens the first vision.

An important difference also separates Daniel 2 from Daniel 7.

Daniel 2 relates a dream given to Nebuchadnezzar and then interpreted by Daniel.

Daniel 7 relates a vision received directly by Daniel.

The first prophetic framework is thus presented through the eyes of a pagan sovereign.

The second is given to the prophet himself.

This difference is also accompanied by a change of representation.

The statue of Daniel 2 has an imposing appearance.

The beasts of Daniel 7 bring out more strongly the violence of earthly powers.

Daniel 8 continues the prophetic development.

This time, the vision mainly features two animals:

a ram;

a goat.

The text then provides an explicit identification:

“The ram which you saw, having the two horns—they are the kings of Media and Persia. And the male goat is the king of Greece” (Daniel 8.20-21).

This clarification is an important step.

In Daniel 2 and Daniel 7, the kingdoms appeared mainly in symbolic form.

In Daniel 8, certain powers are named directly.

The revelation thus becomes more historically identifiable.

Daniel 8 does not present four successive kingdoms in the same form as Daniel 2 and Daniel 7.

The vision concentrates its attention on certain particular stages.

This difference is methodologically important.

Comparing prophecies does not necessarily mean matching each element with an identical element in every vision.

Daniel 8 selects and develops certain parts of prophetic history.

In particular, it provides more information about the conflict between the power represented by the ram and the one represented by the goat, and then about the power that arises from the division that follows.

The relationship between the first three great visions can therefore be summarized as follows:

Daniel 2: general framework

Daniel 7: restatement and deepening

Daniel 8: concentration and identification of certain powers

This movement is an important principle for the interpretation of the book.

A later prophecy can shed light on an earlier prophecy without necessarily reproducing it in full.

Daniel 9 has a different structure.

The chapter begins not with a new vision of kingdoms, but with the reading of an earlier prophecy.

Daniel explains:

“I Daniel understood by books that seventy years were to pass for the desolations of Jerusalem, according to the number of the years whereof the Eternal — show definition INF038 had spoken to Jeremiah the prophet” (Daniel 9.2).

This reading leads Daniel to prayer.

The revelation of the seventy weeks comes in response to this step.

The perspective now focuses particularly on:

• Daniel's people;
• Jerusalem;
• sin;
• atonement;
• righteousness;
• the Messiah;
• the city and the sanctuary;
• the fulfillment of the announced period.

Daniel 9 is therefore not simply a new version of Daniel 2, 7 or 8.

It introduces a particular focus.

Daniel 9.24 announces:

“Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city.”

This wording distinguishes the prophecy from the preceding great symbolic representations.

The statue of Daniel 2, the beasts of Daniel 7 and the ram and the goat of Daniel 8 present successions of powers.

Daniel 9 introduces a period explicitly structured in weeks.

The detailed study of this chronology belongs to the commentary devoted to Daniel 9.

Within the framework of the general structure of the book, the essential point is that the revelation now focuses on Daniel's people and Jerusalem.

Daniel 10 opens the last great prophetic unit.

The chapter must not be isolated from Daniel 11 and Daniel 12.

It provides the context for the revelation that follows.

Daniel is in the third year of Cyrus (Daniel 10.1).

The vision also introduces an invisible dimension of the conflict by mentioning, in particular, the prince of the kingdom of Persia, Michael and the prince of Greece (Daniel 10.13, 20-21).

The chapter thus prepares the reader to understand that the political events described afterward are not presented solely in their human dimension.

Daniel 11 stands out for the breadth of the political events it describes.

Sovereigns succeed one another.

Alliances are made.

Political marriages fail.

Wars break out.

Kingdoms clash.

Persecutions arise.

The prophecy becomes much more detailed than in the general representations of Daniel 2 and Daniel 7.

The movement observed earlier therefore continues:

general architecture → deepening → identification → detailed development.

Daniel 12 leads the last revelation toward its ultimate horizon.

The chapter speaks of a time of distress and then the deliverance of the people (Daniel 12.1).

It then announces:

“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12.2).

The prophetic progression thus reaches a level that goes beyond political change.

The history of the kingdoms finally leads to the question of the destiny of human beings and to the resurrection.

The whole of the visions can be represented in simplified form:

The revelation thus progresses from a general representation of political history toward its eschatological horizon.

This table shows the progression without claiming that all the visions have exactly the same prophetic scope.

Prophetic repetition plays an important role in Daniel.

But the term “repetition” must be understood correctly.

When Daniel 7 returns to a succession of kingdoms already present in Daniel 2, it does not simply reproduce the first vision.

It adds new elements.

When Daniel 8 takes up certain powers, it identifies them more precisely.

When Daniel 11 develops political conflicts, it provides a level of detail absent from the preceding visions.

It is therefore more accurate to speak of:

repetition with deepening;

resumption with precision;

progressive complementarity.

This progression imposes a methodological rule.

Each vision must first be studied for its own sake.

We must examine:

• its context;
• its symbols;
• the interpretations provided by the text;
• its chronology;
• its particularities.

Only then can it be compared with the other visions.

Proceeding in the reverse order would risk forcing one vision into a system built from another.

The comparison must shed light on the text, not replace it.

Certain identifications are provided directly by Daniel.

For example:

“The ram [...] are the kings of Media and Persia” (Daniel 8.20).

“The rough goat is the king of Grecia” (Daniel 8.21).

These indications carry an interpretive value superior to comparisons built solely on resemblances.

The method must therefore always start from the internal interpretations before broadening the comparison.

Other comparisons require a historical or theological reconstruction.

They can be solid and coherent without being explicitly stated by the text.

We must then maintain the fundamental distinction between:

what the text identifies;

what history allows us to compare;

what interpretation reconstructs.

This distinction is particularly important for prophetic chronologies and for attempts at detailed harmonization among several visions.

Despite their differences, the great prophecies of Daniel converge on a fundamental question:

what is the outcome of the history of human kingdoms?

Daniel 2 answers with the kingdom that will never be destroyed.

Daniel 7 answers with judgment and everlasting dominion.

Daniel 8 shows that even the most formidable powers have a limit of their own.

Daniel 9 places Jerusalem and Daniel's people within a purposeful chronology.

Daniel 10-12 leads the conflicts to deliverance and resurrection.

The diversity of the visions therefore does not destroy their unity.

The principle of progression appears even in Daniel's personal experience.

The prophet receives the visions, sometimes asks their meaning and sometimes remains troubled.

At the end of the book, he acknowledges:

“And I heard, but I understood not” (Daniel 12.8).

This statement is an important precaution for any prophetic study.

Receiving or reading a revelation does not necessarily mean immediately mastering all its details.

The book itself maintains a distinction between the revelation given and the full understanding of its fulfillment.
