Cette série explore les confrontations verbales entre Jésus et ses adversaires religieux et politiques durant la dernière semaine de son ministère. Pharisiens et hérodiens, pourtant rivaux entre eux, s'unissent pour tenter de piéger Jésus à travers des questions soigneusement formulées, cherchant à le discréditer aux yeux du peuple ou des autorités romaines.

Ces échanges, rapportés notamment dans les évangiles synoptiques, sont d'une richesse théologique et historique remarquable. Ils portent sur des sujets brûlants de l'époque : le paiement de l'impôt à César, la résurrection des morts, le plus grand commandement. Chaque question est un piège, chaque réponse de Jésus une leçon qui déjoue ses contradicteurs et révèle une sagesse inattendue.

Lire ces péricopes, c'est entrer dans le contexte politique et religieux complexe de la Palestine du premier siècle, et comprendre pourquoi les élites religieuses cherchaient à éliminer Jésus. C'est aussi mesurer la profondeur de son enseignement face à l'adversité.

The Pharisees and Herodians try to trap Jesus by asking him whether one should pay the tax to Caesar. His answer — “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” — foils the trap and establishes the fundamental distinction between civil authority and divine sovereignty, reminding us that man, who bears the image of God, belongs wholly to him.
