Assassination attempt

On the last day of a feast in Jerusalem (13 October 32), the Pharisees try to stone the Messiah Jesus after his proclamations about his divine origin. Jesus escapes death by hiding among his disciples and leaves the city. He probably withdraws to Bethany beyond the Jordan. Only John reports this episode, based on John 8,59.

Comments

We remain in the continuity of the various messages of the Messiah Jesus and of the violent reaction of the . Only the episode of the adulterous woman differs from the poisonous climate described by John. The Master is forced to hide in order to avoid the . His time to die has not yet come, and it will not be by .

The Messiah Jesus, most likely hidden by his many disciples, will manage to leave Jerusalem. Tension is at its peak and the are blinded by anger. In fact, the would have waited for the Messiah Jesus to come out of the Temple in order to stone him. So they were guarding the gates of the city. They had most likely bribed a group of people ready for anything for a few coins. Indeed, the crowd had no interest in seeing such a man die.

So it is by hiding in the midst of his disciples that the Master will succeed in leaving Jerusalem, despite the guards stationed at the various gates.

We think that the Messiah Jesus and his disciples then left for Bethany beyond the Jordan, where they would find a place safer than the . He left quickly with a first group, while other disciples would take the time to gather their belongings at the place where they had been resting before joining him.

It now seems obvious, with the information from John that we have, that a return to Jerusalem would mean the arrest and putting to death of the Messiah Jesus. We know that the Messiah Jesus will take the risk of returning to Jerusalem for the , or Feast of Dedication, on Wednesday 15 December 32 according to John 10.22. It is also called the Festival of Lights. During the last six months of his ministry the Messiah Jesus will remain in Judea, in the region of Jerusalem. He will go in particular to Bethany beyond the Jordan and also to Ephraim in Samaria during this period.
