Is the disappearance of a quarter of humanity conceivable?

The figures given in are of considerable importance and raise the question of their concrete fulfillment.

How many people today?

The current world population is estimated at about 8 billion inhabitants (end of 2025).

A quarter of humanity would therefore represent about 2 billion people.

This figure is colossal: never in human history has such a proportion disappeared in a single event. Even the greatest catastrophes (medieval plagues, world wars) caused tens of millions of deaths, but not billions.

Is it conceivable?

Historically: so far, no known event has reached such a scale. Past catastrophes, however terrible, have never caused the .

Symbolically: Revelation would use this figure to express the gravity and scale of the judgments, while showing that they are limited: a quarter, and not the whole.

Theologically: this quarter is not merely an image, but a prophetic announcement that will be fulfilled. Death will strike massively by the sword, famine, pestilence and wild beasts, but always within the limits set by God. It is not an arbitrary statistic, but a future reality, severe and bounded, that will manifest divine sovereignty in the midst of judgment.

In our own time : global scenarios, pandemics, nuclear wars, climate catastrophes, could in theory cause hundreds of millions of deaths. Yet the disappearance of a quarter of humanity (2 billion individuals) remains extreme and humanly inconceivable. But Revelation affirms that it will happen: this judgment is not a hypothesis but a future reality. What seems impossible to men will come to pass, for God has decreed that Death and Hades will receive power over a quarter of the earth.

Synthesis

A quarter of humanity today corresponds to about 2 billion people. Historically, such a number of deaths has never been reached and seems humanly inconceivable. Yet Revelation affirms that this judgment will be fulfilled in history: massive death will not be a mere image, but a concrete future event.

The figure of a quarter expresses both the gravity of the judgment and its limitation: God sets bounds to the action of Death and Hades. It is not an arbitrary statistic, but a prophecy announcing a historical reality of unprecedented scale.

Spiritually, this perspective recalls the fragility of human existence and divine sovereignty: even in the most severe judgment, God remains master of the limits and of the meaning of history.
