The response of Jesus the Messiah to those who ask for a miracle

Jesus the Messiah denounces a generation that seeks outward proofs instead of recognizing the truth already present. He refuses to submit to a logic of religious spectacle.

Jonah was swallowed by the great fish for three days before being sent to Nineveh to call people to repentance. This sign foreshadows the death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah: three days in the tomb before rising again. It is an inner, spiritual sign, which calls for faith and discernment.

The Queen of Sheba (or of the South) and the people of Nineveh are pagan figures who responded to wisdom or to the call to repentance. Jesus the Messiah declares that these foreigners will be judges of those who, having received more (the presence of the Son of God), did not believe.

“Something greater than Jonah is here… greater than Solomon.” Jesus the Messiah presents himself as greater than the prophets and the kings. He is the incarnate Word, the divine Wisdom, the Messiah, and yet he is rejected by those who should recognize him.

This text is a call to authentic faith: not to wait for outward signs but to recognize the presence of God in Jesus the Messiah. It highlights the responsibility of those who have heard the Gospel: the revelation is there, but it still has to be received.
