Summary of the parable of Matthew 18.23-35

Matthew 18.23-35 tells the of the , a powerful story about forgiveness. The Messiah Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a king who decides to settle accounts with his servants. One of them owes him ten thousand talents, a colossal sum. Unable to pay, he begs the king for patience, and the king, moved with compassion, cancels his entire debt.

However, this same servant meets a fellow servant who owes him a hundred denarii (a much more modest sum). Instead of granting him the same forgiveness, he has him thrown into prison. When the king learns of this, he becomes angry and hands the over to the torturers.

Jesus concludes by saying that God will treat us in the same way if we do not forgive our neighbor. This illustrates the greatness of divine forgiveness and the requirement to forgive others as God forgives us.
