Where was Jesus the Messiah when he learned of his friend Lazarus’ death?

The account of the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11.1-44 does not specify exactly where Jesus the Messiah was when he receives the message that Lazarus is ill. However, other clues in the Gospel of John and the Synoptic Gospels give us indications about the movements of Jesus the Messiah at this period of his ministry.

Contextual clues

Probable location:
Verse John 10.40 mentions that Jesus the Messiah had withdrawn "beyond the Jordan, to the place where John at first baptized." This place is probably Bethabara, or Bethany beyond the Jordan, according to some manuscripts. He is there when he receives the message that Lazarus is ill.

Journey to Bethany:
After receiving the message, Jesus the Messiah stays two more days in the place where he was before deciding to return to Judea. He then tells his disciples that they must return to Judea (John 11.6-7).

These clues suggest that Jesus the Messiah was probably beyond the Jordan, in the region where John the Baptist had baptized, before going to Bethany to perform the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus. He was therefore a day’s walk away.
